Why Birney

Birney is home to three Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs (DHH) for Preschool to fifth grade. There is a Pre-school through fifth-grade program that provides students with dual-language (American Sign Language and English) instruction. There is also a Listening and Spoken Language preschool focusing on oral English development. In addition, Birney offers a special education program and HeadStart preschool. Teachers emphasize Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) to build a learning environment that teaches and rewards positive interactions. Birney recognizes that all students need to feel safe and supported to succeed academically. Research-based instruction is at the heart of classroom teachings with a fully implemented workshop model for English Language Arts and Math Studio practices.
