This week Birney Elementary School celebrated Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. November 14 marked the 64th anniversary of Bridges becoming the first Black student to integrate an all-white elementary school in New Orleans at just six years old.
This day held special significance at Birney, where walking is not just a mode of transportation but a community tradition. Every school day, a walking school bus escorts over 80 students safely to school, thanks to a partnership between the City of Tacoma and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. Led by adult volunteers and school staff, the walking school bus is helping students form healthy habits, learn pedestrian safety, and build a stronger sense of community among students, families, and neighbors. Birney utilizes the city’s Safe Routes to School maps, which provide suggested routes to each TPS elementary school.
