Fourth graders across Tacoma Public Schools are in for an exciting learning adventure this year at the Washington State History Museum.
Last week, Birney Elementary fourth graders toured the museum with engaging guides who led them through exhibits such as “Washington: My Home” and “360”—named for the 360 miles that span from the state’s eastern border to the western shore.
Students also explored a brand-new permanent exhibition, “This Is Native Land”, which opened last month. The exhibit shares Washington’s Native history and cultures through the voices of more than 100 Native contributors representing over 60 Tribes. It features multimedia stories, art, artifacts, and interactive displays.
“I like hearing people talk about their culture,” one fourth grader said after listening to an audio story within the exhibit.
All TPS fourth graders will visit both the Washington State History Museum and the Tacoma Art Museum this year as part of the district’s grade-level field trip program for K–8 students.
You can explore the WA State History Museum for free on the third Thursday of every month. Learn more about the museum’s admission here: History Museum Hours & Admission - Washington State Historical Society
